On Jan 8, 1955 Georgia Tech came to town with a 2-4 record while UK was 7-0 and ranked #1. Tech ended a 129 game home winning streak. Later in the year, Tech also handed UK their only other regular season loss. By the time the NCAA came around, UK had lost 3 starters. Phil Grawemeyer had broken a leg. Billy Evans had been declared a graduate student and ineligible for the NCAA tournie as had been The Studious Three the previous year. Linville Puckett had quit the team over a dispute, saying, basketball at UK "isn't regarded as a game, but as a matter of life or death, with the resemblence of going to war."
