After winning the NCAA the previous year, UK had only All-American Johnny Cox back. Rupp's recruitment of Cox was walking out on the Memorial Coliseum floor after Cox had set a new scoring record in leading Haxard to a state tournament title and asking, "How would you like to run up and down this court for the next four years?"
The previous season UK had faced a very tough schedule, but with this team many of their traditionaly tough opponets were having down years and had lost key players.
UK was rated #1 most of the year and finished at #2. UL beat them in the NCAA regional.
