The Year After Issel

Five players averaged in double figures on this team, led by Tom Payne, Tom Parker, and Mike Casey. However Roy Skinner (Vanderbilt coach) said many times that Larry Steele makes UK go. There was tension on this team as Jim Dinwiddie felt he outplayed Mike Casey and deserved to start. A brief fight broke out on a team plane between Dinwiddie and Claude Vaughn (an economics professor and friend of Rupp) who Dinwiddie thought used his infuence with Rupp to allow Casey to start. Later in the season, both started when Hollenbeck was injured. Tom Payne and Larry Stamper squared off over 25 cents in a poker game. Two of this team's losses occured in the NCAA tournie.
