UK president Donavan said, "I and other university officials knew about and approved the fifty dollars given to basketball players after Sugar Bowl games. When we first appeared in bowl games we learned that it was customary among all schools going to bowls to give their players extraordinary expense money." The SEC had approved UK giving money to football players when UK was in the Orange Bowl. Four public scrimmages were held and Rupp said, "I'll not retire untill the man who said Kentucky can't play in the NCAA hands me the national championship trophy."
