Some have said Pat Riley for a single season was the best forward to ever play for UK. During the previous summer, Riley suffered a back injury while water sking. Riley took medication all season for relaxing muscles and to sleep. He slept in a corset attached to weights and pulleys to ease the pain. Riley had been a highly recruited HS All American quarterback and won numerous medals in swimming, diving, and ice skating.

With the graduation of Conley and Kron, and Riley's decline, it was to much for UK to overcome. Rupp said, "We could be setting here undefeated if we had either Conley or Kron..." 1965-66 Rupp's Runts 27-2 National Finalists
