TUBBY SMITH SAYS
UK IS TEAM TO BEAT
IN SEC IN 2007
Thank you Tubby for clarifying for all UK fans your goals and expectations for the 2006-07 Kentucky Basketball team. We will be watching with great interest as this season unfolds to determine whether your leadership is sufficient to achieve such a "lofty" goal, winning the SEC. Since you did not specify, Concerned Fans will accept either a regular season or post season tournament championship as proof that you have achieved that which you set out to demonstrate your worthiness to continue as UK's Head Basketball coach.
Here is your promise:
"Everybody is improved. There's as many returning players as I've ever seen. It's going to be a real, I mean a real battle, but we think that we're going to be the team to beat in the SEC this year."
Of course, this statement is as it was reported in the Herald Leader. The Courier Journal provides a slightly different version, or perhaps you just repeated the promise to emphasize its importance. In either case, Brett Dawson reports it this way:
"Looking back on last year, even though we had some ugly games, we did have some opportunities to make hay," Smith told the crowd. "But we're not going to talk about that, because we think we're going to be the team to beat in the SEC this year."
Smith made these comments before an audience of about 900 that gathered at the downtown Marriott Hotel for the annual UK basketball Tip-off Luncheon sponsored by the UK Alumni Association in Louisville.
In the same column, written by our friend Jerry Tipton of the Lexington Herald-Leader, Tubby offered some sage advice to Mr. Mitch Barnhart, the AD at Kentucky, and technically still Tubby's boss despite the fact that Mr. Barnhart coronated Tubby Smith as the CEO of the Basketball Program last July. Mr. Tipton wrote,
"Smith playfully advised Barnhart to stay away from Internet postings."
In July, AD Barnhart placed his support squarely behind Tubby Smith, declaring Tubby the CEO of Kentucky Basketball. Since that time, Mr. Barnhart has continued to pour out lavish, unmerited praise on this CEO. Some Concerned Fans believe that Mr. Barnhart's purpose is to separate himself from Tubby Smith by handing over all the keys to the Basketball program so the responsibility for the upcoming train wreck will be undisputedly all Tubby's. However, most Concerned Fans take a different view of Mr. Barnhart's failure to protect the UK Program from further demise by allowing Tubby Smith another year. Thank you Tubby for clarifying these issues so well for all fans to see that you understand that UK rightfully belongs at the top of the SEC, as THE TEAM TO BEAT, and whether you, Mr. Barnhart, or Dr. Todd choose to read or ignore the internet, the Big Blue Nation does not ignore the internet, neither do members of the National Press.
